My informal and personal adventure with coaching began when I was just a little girl. I can recall years of riding alongside of my father in the car, listening to tape decks of some of the greatest life coaches of all time. Messages from Zig Ziglar, Tony Robbins, and Les Brown filled my head, and though they did not make perfect sense at that time, it was during my teenage years that I found myself starting English papers with quotes like “shoot for the moon because even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars,” and telling my friends that their “attitude, not aptitude, determines altitude.”
For my entire life I’ve been told I’m a natural-born leader, but it was the time I spent serving as an Army officer that totally influenced my leadership style, and taught me how to really take care of people. I developed my love for travel when I was stationed in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. I would often use my four-day weekends to catch a short flight to nearby Asian countries, getting lost down within their massive museums and heritage sites. Before I knew it, I had visited seven new countries in a matter of a year while living abroad.
When I returned from my assignment to Korea, I felt this nagging calling on my life to do something bigger…something greater than myself. Up until this point, I had been totally career focused, neglecting myself and those around me. And despite having discovered my love for travel, I felt pretty empty. I was in a long-distance, dead-end marriage, burnt out from work, and generally unhappy with my life and the way things were going. I did, however know that I felt most alive when I was traveling or helping others in some way. So…I set off to obtain my Master of Social Work degree.
Currently, I am a psychotherapist at Hampton University working with students, helping them to maintain and enhance their physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being and functioning.
